Amazing work by a CEHS graduate! Swetha Palanappian, class of 2021, published her first scientific paper in the journal Exposure and Health. Her paper, titled Polystyrene and Polyethylene Microplastics Decrease Cell Viability and Dysregulate Inflammatory and Oxidative Stress Markers of MDCK and L929 Cells In Vitro is written from research conducted with mentors at UNE for the 2020 Science Fair. During her high school years, she completed three projects for the Science Fair, each based on a different aspect of microplastics. Her published paper focused on investigating the effects of microplastics on mammalian cells. Her paper contributes to the growing information on the risks of microplastics. She is currently a freshman at UC Berkley.

CEHS grad Ben Berman talked to Ellen DeGeneres about making free pizzas for his community and raising money for local Philadelphia charities. During the pandemic, Ben started making pizza as a way to connect with friends. To maintain social distance - he lowers the pizza to the street using using a makeshift pulley. The idea took off! His pizza is so popular, he has a weekly lottery. People from around the world - who will never get to taste one of Ben's pizzas - are donating. Ben covers all production costs. Donations go to Philly charities fighting hunger and homelessness. To help continue his efforts, Ellen and her friends at Shutterfly gave Ben $10,000! So that is $44,000 and counting! Follow Ben @goodpizzaPHL on Instagram! https://www.ellentube.com/video/ellen-meets-pizza-maker-giving-back-to-community.html

In an effort to have our schools open next week, we have developed a bus schedule that will hopefully only have to be implemented for the week of December 7-11, 2020. There will have to be double runs in order to provide students with transportation to and from school. The times listed will be arrival times at schools in the morning, and departure times from school in the afternoon. 2nd wave bus students should plan to be at their bus stops 15 minutes after their normal time. We are asking parents who can transport their own students to school next week, to do so in order to help out with this transportation challenge. Please check your email to view the schedule. Thank you.
Effective Thursday, December 3, all Cape Elizabeth Schools will transition to full remote learning. Please check your email for the letter from Superintendent Wolfrom regarding the positive case.
