Students in Ms. Buchsbaum's biology classes recently collected data on vegetation in the Spurwink Salt Marsh near CEHS. They will continue to collect data on various factors such as salinity (i.e., salt level) throughout the year and submit their findings to scientists studying changes in the area related to coastal flooding and the upcoming removal of Sawyer Road. Students also observed some wildlife!
This visit was supported by Ms. Buchsbaum's dad, Dr. Robert Buchsbaum, a scientist who worked on salt marsh conservation and restoration projects with Mass Audubon for over 30 years. In 2023, he was awarded the Gulf of Maine Visionary Award for his contributions to the field. CESD staff also connected with staff from the Casco Bay Estuary Partnership and used Town resources to guide this course of study.
Ms. Buchsbaum's classes will continue to visit the salt marsh throughout the year to connect different topics in her curriculum to a local resource for hands-on, relevant experiences.
